The origins of badminton can be traced back to two games, battledore and shuttlecock, that were played in Greece, China, and India more than 2,000 years ago. The game, which simply involved two players hitting a shuttlecock back and forth without allowing it to fall, became very popular in England during the 17th century, especially among members of the upper class. During the 1800s, a net was introduced to the game, and it was given the name “Badminton” after the Duke of Beaufort’s home in Gloucester, England, where it was often played. By the end of the century, the first badminton championships were held in England, and others soon followed a few decades later in Denmark, the United States, and Canada. During the second half of the 20th century, badminton’s popularity continued to grow throughout the world. In 1966, the sport became part of the Commonwealth Games, and it was later introduced as an Olympic event in 1992. Today, badminton remains a popular competitive sport and backyard pastime in countries around the globe.
